Cypress Primary School is a large, split-site school situated at the northern tip of the London Borough of Croydon.
The two sites lie on either side of the very steep Cypress Road. As you come from the bottom of Cypress Road, towards South Norwood Hill, you will see the infant site on your right and, further up, the junior site on your left.
The infant site accommodates "Little Cypress" where we offer education for 2 to 4 year olds. Our Community Room is also on the infant site where, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, we run Stay and Plays for 0 to 5 year olds and their parents/carers.
Cypress has had a changing history. The Junior Site was built at the end of the 1930s as a Primary School. The post war baby boom saw the need for more housing and school places so, in the 1950s, an Infant School was built on the site of an old dairy site lower down the hill. We then had Cypress Infants and Cypress Juniors - two completely separate schools, each with its own head teacher.
Both schools were two forms of entry at that time; this means two classes of 30 children in every year group from reception right up to year 6.
In the early 1990s, a nursery was added to the Infant School. This initially offered a morning or an afternoon session, each day, to 52 three year old children.
In the mid-1990s, both schools expanded to 3 forms of entry.
The more recent years have seen further change and increased activity at Cypress:
We now offer childcare from 7:30am to 6:00pm each day from Little Cypress right up to year 6 and we provide childcare in the school holidays.
There was the addition of a Children's Centre to the Infant site and, as government funding and policies changed, the de-designation of the Centre and the move to our current provision of offering education to 2 year olds.
Nursery children can now stay all day if their families want them to.
A federation was formed of the two separate schools, which was followed by a formal, permanent amalgamation, leading to the present situation of one "Cypress Primary School", led by one head teacher.
In 2012 and 2013, we admitted 4 reception classes, not the usual 3. So two of our year groups have 120 children in them. This was to support the recent population increase, especially in boroughs like Croydon.
Due to the increase in the number of forms of entry, major works have taken place on the Infant Site, and will also occur on the Juniors, to expand and improve the asset of the school sites and better equip us to be able to accommodate the growth in pupil numbers.
As you can see, a combination of being forward thinking and creative, a popular first choice for parents, and having Local Authority confidence in the school has meant that things move on and improve at Cypress.
The number of children we can now admit from nursery to Year 6 is 742, plus up to 48 two year olds. When full, that is 790 pupils in total.
